This is the category that looks at your prose and reports what it finds: common mechanical grammar patterns, familiar misspellings, and passages shared with another document. Four tools, one workflow, and the most important scope note on the site.
The workflow is the pre-submission pass. A draft is finished, more or less, and before it goes to a professor, an editor, a client, or the public, it gets checked. The grammar checker goes first: it catches a small set of patterns such as doubled words, “could of,” and common agreement mistakes. The spelling checker goes second, matching a curated list of known misspellings and offering an ignore list when a match is intentional. If the document quotes or builds on sources, the plagiarism checker looks for complete matching sentences in a source you supply. The text similarity checker compares word sets, frequencies, and three-word phrases between two documents.
Start with the grammar checker, then the spelling checker, in that order. Fixing structure before orthography means you read each sentence once for big problems and once for small ones.
Now the honest part, because these four tools are the ones readers most need to understand correctly. A rule-based grammar checker does not understand meaning; it misses errors that match no rule it knows and can flag constructions that are perfectly fine. It is an aid, not an editor. The spelling checker is not a full dictionary: unflagged words may still be misspelled. The plagiarism checker has no web index and no database of published papers. A clean result means no complete matching sentences were found by this method; paraphrases and shorter overlaps can still be present. Institutions use checking services with far wider reach.
For the deeper questions, what counts as plagiarism covers the ethics and the gray areas, and how plagiarism checkers work explains the mechanics behind the report you just read.
