Independent writing tools and guides, edited by a human

Disclaimer

What Textoria's text tools can and cannot do: results are computational aids, not professional editing, legal, or academic advice. Verify before relying.

What this disclaimer covers

Textoria publishes 22 free text tools and a library of guides about writing and editing. This page states plainly what those tools are, what they are not, and where responsibility lies when you act on their results. It is short by legal standards and written to be understood rather than skimmed. If anything on it is unclear, email info@textoria.online and we will answer directly.

The tools are aids, not professionals

Every tool on this site performs a computation on text you supply. The word counter counts. The grammar checker matches patterns. The readability scorer applies published formulas. None of them understands your document the way a human editor, lawyer, or academic advisor does, and none of their outputs constitutes professional editing, legal advice, or academic advice.

The distinction matters most at the moments people are most tempted to blur it. A grammar checker that reports zero issues has not certified that your thesis is correct. It has reported that your thesis contains none of the patterns it knows how to find. A plagiarism checker that reports no matches has not cleared you of plagiarism. It has compared your text against the sources you gave it, which may or may not include the source that matters.

What each tool family can and cannot do

We document limitations on every tool page, next to the tool itself, because that is where they are useful. This section collects the important ones.

Grammar checker

The grammar checker is rule-based. It looks for a small set of common patterns such as subject-verb disagreement, doubled words, “could of,” and missing spaces after punctuation. It does not parse meaning. It will miss errors that match no rule it knows, it can flag constructions that are actually fine, and it has no opinion about whether a sentence is clear, elegant, or true. Style is not its department.

Spelling checker

The spelling checker matches a curated list of known common English misspellings. It is not a full dictionary and does not flag every unknown word. The ignore list lets you dismiss intentional matches. An unflagged word can still be wrong, and a typo that forms another real word ("form" typed for "from") needs a human reader or a contextual checker.

Plagiarism and similarity checkers

The plagiarism checker compares your text against sources you supply. It has no web index, no database of published papers, and no access to anything you did not paste in. A clean result means "no overlap with the sources you provided," and nothing more. The text similarity checker is blunt in a different way: it reports how much two passages have in common, which includes legitimately reused material such as quotations, templates, and your own earlier drafts.

Counting and analysis tools

Counters can disagree with other software at the edges. Hyphenated compounds, emoji, smart quotes, and line breaks inside pasted PDFs are counted differently by different programs, so our word counter and your word processor may both be right by their own rules. Readability scores apply formulas published decades ago, the Flesch family among them; they estimate how hard a text is to parse, not whether it is good.

Cleaning tools and converters

Cleaners and converters do exactly what their documentation says and nothing more. The Markdown converter handles common syntax; it does not implement every extension, and unusual nesting can produce HTML you would not have written by hand. Check any converted output before publishing it, the same way you would check anything else.

Verify before you rely

The pattern across all of this: these tools tell you what is mechanically present in your text. Before a result influences something that matters, verify it. If a contract clause is at stake, ask a lawyer, not a text cleaner. If an essay's originality is at stake, understand that our checker sees only the sources you give it, and your institution may use services that see far more. If a word limit is enforced by someone else's software, such as an application portal, confirm the count the way that software counts it. Submissions, publications, and contracts are exactly the places where a quick second check costs nothing and a wrong assumption costs a great deal.

No warranty

Textoria and its tools are provided as-is and as-available, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including the implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We believe the tools work well, and we fix them when they do not, but we do not warrant that any output is accurate, complete, or suitable for your situation. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Textoria and the Textoria editorial team are not liable for damages arising from your use of the site or your reliance on its outputs.

That is the legal core of this page, and here it is in plain language: if a tool's output leads you into a bad decision, the decision was yours, and we cannot accept responsibility for it.

Guides on Textoria link to sources, references, and other sites we think are genuinely useful. We do not control those sites, we do not review everything they publish, and a link is not an endorsement of everything at the destination. When you follow a link away from Textoria, that site's own policies apply from that point on.

Guides are general information

Everything published on this site is general information about writing, editing, and text processing. It is not individualized advice, and it cannot account for your institution's rules, your contract's terms, or your jurisdiction's laws. Where those matter, consult a qualified person.

Changes to this disclaimer

If the site's tools or practices change in a way that affects this page, the page changes first, and the "Last updated" line at the top changes with it.
